Providing Cutting-Edge Cancer Treatment in Patagonia
April 16, 2018
Centro Oncológico Integral (COI), a project of the Medical Foundation of Rio Negro and Neuquén, is a Cancer Center located in the northern Patagonian region of Argentina, home to 1.3 million people. In such a remote area, access to health care for early detection can be difficult, leading to a larger patient population with advanced stages of cancer.
In response to the unique needs of its community, COI has taken aggressive steps to offer cutting-edge cancer care. COI’s vision is positioned on four fundamental pillars - Prevention, Education, Diagnosis and Treatment. Their aim is to integrate these services among interdisciplinary groups of professionals.
COI leverages the CT SIM+™ Moveable Laser System from Sun Nuclear to support this integrated vision. “It was necessary to have a positioning technology that complies with this vision of integration for the Radiotherapy and PET-CT services of Nuclear Medicine,” said Ricardo Ruggeri, M,Sc. en Física Médica, Head of Medical Physics Service of COI.
The CT SIM+ system was installed with the PET-CT Biograph™ mct20 of Siemens in conjunction with the Monaco simulation marking platform. Because of the versatility of the systems and workflow integration, the medical marking in the Treatment Planning System and the location of the isocenters of the tumors with Gammex lasers is performed in less than 15 minutes with the patient on the couch.
In addition to timesaving efficiencies, the wireless connection with MOSAIQ allows COI to transmit the positioning images and record them for future reference.
The incorporation of the CT SIM+ system by Gammex represents a milestone in technology for COI in serving cancer patients in the Patagonian region of Argentina.
Sun Nuclear, the global leader in Patient Safety solutions, offers the next generation in laser systems. The 2014 addition of Gammex—which has installed more than 4,000 lasers globally—resulted in the innovative CT SIM+ and MICRO+™ systems.
